Taking in Water
Issue 21:1 | March 2001
Artists are focusing on water as a subject from environmental, political and social perspectives as well as aesthetic. In recent years there have been many exhibitions and projects around water, wind, weather, irrigation systems, pollution, tides, waste, threats to waterways, and the nature of islands and oceans. They range from v ideo projections to digital murals, photography, painting, installations and web sites. The Art and Landliteracy Forum (ALF) was established within the School of Contemporary Arts at Southern Cross University in 1996. It was convened as an ongoing forum for investigating ways in which contemporary arts practice can be pro-active in relation to environmental issues. The program evolved into a series of placemaking/placemarking projects that were focused on contributing to cultural sustainability.
