The Recirculate Experiment: The Gallery as Laboratory
As an artist I think of every exhibition—indeed every artwork—as an experiment. By this I mean that the outcome is never certain. I’m conducting an investigation through the hands-on process of making art; I’m problem solving, learning, discovering. As an educator in visual arts, I encourage my students to think of the gallery as an experimental zone—a laboratory space—in which they can test ideas, play and even fail productively. In Recirculate, a group exhibition that I curated explicitly to gather knowledge, I extended this idea by experimenting on artists.
