Comedy as Resistance: Comedy as Alchemy

As a disabled, chronically ill, queer, working class, Muslim woman of Turkish descent with immigrant parents, navigating systems that weren’t built for me, the decision to be funny has become a way of survival from a young age. My mere existence often feels like a political and alchemical disturbance. To be seen, to take up space, to be creative, to be able to afford to make work, or to just be myself, often feels like an act of defiance. Being in the public eye—embodying and expressing the multitudes of me—is a way of reclaiming agency.
