Archiving Australian Media Arts
I was poised to begin with a detailed account of the complex nature of time-based art and its conservation requirements. However, an attempt to access experimental works online offered a more immediate and illustrative example. Published in 2023 on Runway Journal’s online platform, I find Xanthe Dobbie’s Editor’s Letter in Issue 46: Ghost is prophetically, already that – a digital ghost. Only translucent fragments of the work are perceptible, while platform interoperability challenges and technological obsolescence both mediate and deny access to it.
