Billy Coulthurst’s Koalas
The essence of the animal painting genre is the manner in which animals become proxies for oblique human desires, sentiments and mythologies of a period. Australian artist Billy Coulthurst could be understood as a contemporary animal painter, of sorts. Coulthurst graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2018 and moved to Berlin in 2022, where he now lives and works. He exhibits regularly, frequently taking anthropomorphic creatures as his subject matter.
