The Neoteric project and three Adelaide painters
Artists have a long history of doing things for themselves. Developing public projects, performances and happenings, opening galleries and publishing texts, these endeavours are often born out of a desire and need for more exhibition space, innovative connections with audiences and spaces, and as a way of telling their stories beyond commercial and institutional pressures. Initiated and produced by artist and curator Ray Harris, the exhibitions Neoteric (2022) and Neoterica (2024) joined the long history of artist-led ventures emblematic of the South Australian arts and cultural landscape. Harris has a considerable history in developing arts projects that pay artists and create opportunities, and in founding and running artist’s studios. For over a decade her community engagement, advocacy and independent contributions to the Adelaide arts ecosystem have been personally invested. For Harris, the Neoteric/a Project and exhibitions were envisaged as a celebration of the work of 40 mid-career, commercially unrepresented South Australian artists.
