Paint is a doing word: Anna Gore and Mary-Jean Richardson

As I walked around Anna Gore and Mary-Jean Richardson’s shared studio, I was struck by an odd photograph. ‘It’s the Square Colosseum inside the actual Colosseum!’, Anna excitedly explained. More accurately, the image shows a scale model of Mussolini’s Palazzo Della Civiltà Italiana (Palace of Italian Civilisation), in a museum vitrine, nestled under the grand arches of The Colosseum. The stark and uniform symbol of Italy’s fascist regime, among the crumbling walls of the Colosseum, already resembles a painting Gore might make: two icons of the past, juxtaposed without context, their histories folding in on one another.
