There is a joke that I recall, probably overheard late at a wedding when the mood shifts to sitting on white plastic chairs outside: A foreign ambassador is greeted by Ukrainian folk songs. Jolly, rosy-cheeked singers welcome him with a slew of upbeat, almost victorious tunes. The ambassador asks a singer, ‘Wow, what joy! This song is so catchy — is it about a plentiful harvest?’
