Artist to the Power of Mother

In 2023, Countess.Report founder Elvis Richardson and writer Melinda Rackham published CoUNTess: Spoiling Illusions since 2008, contextualising seventeen years of number crunching on inequality across the Australian contemporary art sector. The long-running project produces quadrennial national data which tracks the ongoing ‘count’ of representation among female, non-binary and First Nations visual artists, translating their presence in galleries and museums into quantitative figures that institutions and policymakers recognise. For The Mother Issue, Artlink invited Elvis to reflect on the ‘double-data’ of being an artist-and-a-mother.
