Archie Barry: Entangled listening

This year, I have been forced to change my habits to maintain connection with those I love. Previously unlikely to indulge in a long phone call, it is now a habit to have someone’s voice buzzing in my ear. Even with close friends, something has changed. I now have a greater sense of who they are; the long, languorous conversation reveals more than can be communicated in the hubbub of public space. When limited by distance, vocal communication matters—be it an extended confession, or just an emphatic grunt or sigh.
