Entangled Belonging: Asian Australian artists and cultural hybridity

Twenty-five years ago, at the third Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT3, 1999), Guan Wei was the first and only Asian Australian artist included in the ‘Australian’ selection. In the catalogue, Lynne Seear noted an apparent contradiction in his mixed media installation work: ‘Guan Wei has occasionally resisted the pressure of some critics who rush to identify specific Chinese references in his work… nevertheless the essential characteristic of what has been termed the artist’s “charismatic Chineseness” are undeniably present’.
