Breaking the cycle: Life, death and resurrection in the art of Svenja Kratz

Australian artist Svenja Kratz produces fascinating and poetic works of art that explore the relationship between scientific knowledge and culture. Abandoning the artist's studio for the laboratory, Kratz developed an innovative project while undertaking a residency at SymbioticA, Centre of Excellence in the Biological Arts at the University of Western Australia in 2010. The project, Towards the Immortalisation of Kira and Rama (2010) saw the corpses of two fetal calves, Kira and Rama, sourced from a local abattoir, undergo a range of scientific, and artistic processes.
