Janus-faced: Art and Community in Mildura

On Easter Saturday in 1975, by the banks of the Murray River in far northwest Victoria, the 6th Mildura Sculpture Triennial was officially launched. The event drew together a vibrant crowd of Australia’s foremost sculptors, artists, curators and critics, converging with government dignitaries and students, most of whom travelled significant distances to attend. By 1975, the Triennial had expanded beyond the walls and lawns of Mildura Arts Centre to occupy vacant shops and offices in the town centre and scatter across hectares of saltbush scrubland along the river’s edge. These ‘Sculpturescapes’ were viewed by many artworld commentators as a nexus for burgeoning experimental art developments in Australia and New Zealand.
