Nikos Papastergiadis

Nikos Papastergiadis is Deputy Director of the Australia Centre, University of Melbourne. He is the author of Modernity as Exile, 1992, Dialogues in the Diaspora, 1998, and The Turbulence of Migration, 2000. His new book, Topographies: Art, Place and the Everyday is to be published in 2003.

Artlink here prints a slightly abbreviated version of Nikos Papastergiadis essay which was first delivered as a lecture in Finland on 30 September 2001. This essay covers issues surrounding the idea of the other, the enemy, and discusses some of the ramifications of the events of September 11. In november that year it was used as a companion piece to the exhibition Fallout at the Victorian College of the Arts. The Exhibition featured artists Destiny Deacon, Elizabeth Gower, Homi Vesal, Jarrad Kennedy, Justine Khamara amongst others.
