This Asian Century

Issue 33:1 | March 2013

It is twenty years since Australia embraced the approaching “Asian Century.” During this period, the visual arts in Asia went from dispersed pockets of activity to the vast regional network of connections that we see today. This edition looks to developments across recent art from Japan, China, Southeast Asia, India, Korea, Indonesia and Pakistan to reflect on diverse streams of cultural practice that include identification with Islam, traditional artisanal and fine art traditions, art in museums and cultural institutions and the growth in digital and film media.
