New Zealand Contemporary Art Turangawaewae A Place to Stand
Vol 26 no 2
Well known Australian writer, artist and editor, Stephanie Radok is the editor of New Zealand Contemporary Art Turangawaewae: A Place to Stand, launched at the Sydney Biennale and at ARTSPACE Auckland. Artists and galleries throughout New Zealand have never been so active, with international programs and new media activity building on the work of far-sighted pioneers. Experienced NZ writers look closely at established and emerging artists and spaces, regional practice, publishing, and new events. Artists include the installation group et al., Eve Sullivan, Michael Stevenson, Francis Upritchard, Peter Madden, Shane Cotton, Terry Urbahn, Simon Denny. The documentary strand in contemporary photography is scrutinised. Writers include Tina Barton, Emma Bugden, Sarah Farrer, Natasha Conland, Lara Strongman, Andrew Paul Wood , Tessa Laird, Kate Montgomery and Emma Velde.

Special gallery is an activity centre at Level 1, 26 Customs St East, Auckland. Since 2004 we have avoided fixed timetables, funding, fundraisers and charging artists.
To date; Jason Lindsay spent 2 months in the Gallery, making it into an ordered matrix of home ware furniture abstraction. Tahi Moore spent 1.2 minutes in the Gallery, manoeuvring a remote controlled car. Fiona Conner spent two days in the Gallery, sanding the floor down. Seung Yul Oh spent a week in the Gallery, painting the walls with paintings. Nick Austin spent an afternoon in the gallery, putting up a toothbrush with a shoelace instead of bristles, a painting of a duvet, and other negotiations into significant form. He spent a night in there, sleeping on Simon Denny's tent, with a bubble wrap blanket, imitating a burrito. Tao Wells taught us lessons. Tao Wells was very casual. Daniel Du Bern cleaned the paint off our glass door and broke our walls with soil. Tahi lead a team of ethnologists through the caverns of the building. The Gladeyes played new old pop songs. Helga Fassonaki pulled at audio tape. Alex Vivian said things said things. Chris Cudby drew from the future, Dave King cut up life into magazines, and with Julian Dyne, they invented space. Fraser Munro taught us how to be confrontational, and then made us feel nice. Eddie Clemens produced a highly finished tissue box for the back shelves of cars, in constant motion. Pop group Cock Destroyer debuted with a chaotic cover of R Kelly's pop opera. Richard Bryant and Patrick Lundberg, broke mirrors, and we listened. Simon Denny spent his evenings looking at objects. Jennifer Mason and her double discussed minor affairs and was educated as a cat. Robin Kydd smoked and spilt coffee onto lightboxes, projecting their moving parts. Enjoy Public Art Gallery presented some best sellers from their non-profit collection. Special group spent time looking at early art school work. Fiona Conner, Finn Ferrier, Ben Tankard and Chris Fitzgerald made a show which was then buried by the council in a local park. Goldenaxe filled the room with cooling smoke and inspirational music. Stephan Neville gathered drawings of friendship. Cuckoo grouped before a leap to Melbourne. Lou Darlington and Nate Williamson launched their commercial dealership. We continue to do things here.
