Adelaide architect John Maitland is renovating his own home, and we follow his progress, setbacks, and uncompromising commitment to sustainability. What unfolds is essentially a human interest story, showcasing details of the methodology and products of sustainable building practices.
Much problem-solving goes on when standard building systems and site practices just don't work for producing a building that can stay warm in winter and cool in summer without plugging in an energy-hungry air-conditioner.
Add to the mix a tiny site bounded by neighbouring buildings, a narrow one way street and a "night cart" rear lane. John has some interesting times solving issues such as rain water storage, access during construction, sound-proofing, access to winter sunlight, and more, including conjunction of the existing heritage cottage and the contemporary addition to its rear.
Energy Architecture's commitment to the documentary process has stemmed from a belief in the importance of narrative in sustainability, across all eras and cultures.

There's a gap between what's possible in building development and what actually happens, what people end up living in. Bridging that gap is what the DVD is about.
Each step of the building process, filmed during the 7 month building program, illustrates critical elements of the 4 Key Areas in sustainable building development:
- Water Collection, Storage, Treatment & Re-use
- Conservation of Resources & Reducing Waste
- Thermal Comfort (passive & active)
- Materials & Construction Systems
John Maitland, founder of Energy Architecture, tells the story, conveying his passion for building processes, innovation, beauty, quality lifestyle and minimal environmental impact. The materials and processes of building are revealed, documenting the gradually hidden elements of what makes a building sustainable.
The project is dedicated to younger generations who take in hand the future of generations to come.
